Food photography is a profession in itself and I know it is difficult to find a camera that is good for it. When I bought my first camera years ago, I really didn’t know what to look for, but now that I have years of experience, I know exactly.
My goal is for you to find the right camera for food photography, which does not necessarily mean the most expensive or newest camera. I don’t want you to buy a camera that has unnecessary functions or falls short in that area.
I paid attention to aspects such as sensor and resolution because a 24 MP sensor is already good enough for food photography. Other aspects such as design and usability also caught my attention, here is a list of important points.
You can’t get there with just a camera, we all know that. That’s why I recommend a number of lenses per camera, so you can find everything here.

Food photography requires a pretty good camera, and the Canon R6 II is just that. It’s incredibly popular amongst food photographers and with good reason. I think the images that come out of the R6 II are of great quality.
I can talk about specs all day, but real experience is worth a lot more. The handling is well refined and the grip isn’t too small.
I do have a few downsides, but all in all, I think the R6 II is the best camera for food photography.

What I like/dislike about the Canon R6 II
Like
- First of all, the image quality is great. If you use the right lens, the photos will look sharp and crispy. The colors are popping and the dynamic range is also great. I could push the images pretty far without seeing much noise.
- The camera is almost perfect in terms of ergonomics, the buttons are right where I want them to be. The joystick is right where my thumb is, just really well thought-out. I like the fact that the on/off button is not on the right side, making it much more accessible.
- You can take 40 photos a second, which is useful for some situations, but there are some downsides to this. I will explain shortly.
- Overall, the weight isn’t too heavy and I thought the R6 II was well-balanced if you use bigger lenses. I use the 24-70mm, and it doesn’t feel too front-heavy.
Dislike
- Now, when you use the electronic shutter, the dynamic range is worse. You have about 2 stops less dynamic range, which I could notice in the noise level in the shadows.
- When using the 40fps mode, the buffer fills up quickly. I could shoot for about 2 seconds before having to wait for the buffer to clear.

Best Sony camera for food photography
Sony A7 IV
Sebas' take
As for the second camera, I recommend the Sony A7 IV. As it’s the direct competitor of the R6 II, there are many similarities, but in some respects, I like the A7 IV more.
Starting with the image quality, the 33 MP sensor allows me to crop without losing too much quality. Also, I could print much larger without my clients complaining, also important.
I do have a few flaws, but overall, I think the A7 IV is the best Sony camera for food photography.

What I like/dislike about the Sony A7 IV
Like
- Firstly, as I already said, the image quality is just amazing. The colors are popping and the dynamic range is about 14 stops. I could edit images and push the highlights and shadows. There isn’t a magenta tone like the previous Sony models, so that’s an improvement.
- The A7 IV is also almost perfect in terms of ergonomics, the fourth dial on top is especially handy, I could assign lots of settings to that. It feels great in my hands, I really felt like a professional A1-style body.
- Autofocus is accurate, I could totally rely on it while shooting. It got the shot almost all of the time, although it can’t recognize food. Just tap the screen and the camera will follow the subject.
- 10fps is great to have, especially since it has a mechanical shutter. If you’re throwing food or water, it can freeze the image without rolling shutter.
Dislike
- One thing I didn’t like about the A7 IV is that you can only use the 10fps mode while shooting compressed lossy RAW, which is not as high quality as the lossless RAW. Now, when shooting the latter, I managed to shoot 6fps max.
- The buffer is almost limitless, but in order to have that unlimited buffer, you need CF-Express type A cards, which are expensive compared to SD cards.
