Canon R1 rumors: The best camera we've ever seen

When we look at the specifications, it seems as if Canon is going to do the impossible. The sensor gets a very high resolution and not only that, you could also make movies with cinema quality.

Canon’s R1 will have a new sensor, rumored to be a 45+ megapixel stacked BSI sensor. This means that Canon uses approximately the same sensor as the Canon R5, but stacked.

There are many more specifications that are going to be revolutionary, so read on.

Canon R1 video specs

If you like to shoot cinematic videos that could be played in the cinema, then the Canon R1 could certainly help you with that. With the ability to record 8K videos at a maximum frame rate of 60 frames per second, you can even slow down the image at this resolution.

If you really want to film high-quality slow-motion, you have the option to film 4K in 120 frames per second. This way you can slow down the image up to 5 times. An option that we also encountered with the Canon EOS R3.

As we now see with the Canon R3, the camera can also record 6K RAW videos. We expect the Canon R1 to even be able to shoot 8K60p RAW, just like the Nikon Z9 and Nikon Z8. This gives you complete flexibility during post-processing.

Thanks to the built-in stabilization, you will see fewer unwanted movements during filming. The R1 also has optimized cooling, so you’re less likely to overheat while filming.

The best focus mechanism ever

Focusing has never been easier and simpler than ever before. The Canon R1 will automatically detect multiple subject types and adjust its behavior accordingly.

For example, the Canon EOS R1 can recognize subjects such as people, animals, birds and vehicles. It doesn’t matter how small the subject is, the Canon R1 will recognize it.

This is the same focusing system that we also see in the Canon R3 and the Canon EOS R6 II, called Dual Pixel AF II. This would even allow the Canon R1 to recognize various smaller subjects, such as eyes.

The handy system called Eye Control AF is also installed in the Canon R1, which allows you to adjust the focus point using your eyes. So far, the Canon R3 is the only camera that has this, however, we will see improvements in accuracy.

Burst mode of the EOS R1

Yes, you read that right. There’s never too much action for the Canon EOS R1. We expect the Canon R1 to have a very fast burst mode that can electronically capture up to 24 frames per second with 85 MP RAW. The speed will increase to 40 frames per second at a resolution of 24 MP RAW.

Canon R1 release date

Not much is known about the release date of the Canon R1, but it’s almost certain that it won’t hit the market until 2024. Canon always takes 4 years to release a new flagship model such as the Canon 1DX series. The last was the Canon 1DX III released in 2020.

In addition, brands release their top-of-the-line models at events. The Olympic Games will be held in Paris in 2024. So it indicates that the Canon EOS R1 will be released in the first or second quarter of 2024.

Canon R1 price

Little is known about the price. The Canon R1 is Canon’s flagship and the model above the Canon R3. The R3 is already for sale for a large amount of more than ¢5000. Canon’s R1 will probably move more towards $8,000-$10,000, a figure that is very high and comparable to the Fujifilm GFX 100.

Canon R1 viewfinder and screen

The Canon R1 will feature a bright, very high-quality viewfinder. The viewfinder will have 9 million pixels and you will have virtually no lag. Thanks to the 240 fps OLED screen, you can hardly see that it’s a screen! You can also set the viewfinder in a 60Hz mode to save battery.

You can find a 3.2″ touchscreen at the back that is fully tiltable. Taking pictures from below or above will be easy with the Canon EOS R1.

In addition, the Canon EOS R1 will have a no-blackout viewfinder. This is very useful during situations where you want to capture fast action. The camera takes photos without you seeing a black screen. So you will never miss the action again.

Use EF-lenses on the Canon EOS R1

The Canon EOS R1 uses the Canon RF mount. Recently only new, good-quality lenses have been added. Canon is doing very well when it comes to the price-quality ratio. Of course, if you want perfect quality, you can buy the Canon L lenses, which are also expensive. However, you can now also buy professional lenses that are a lot lighter and cheaper.

You can mount the Canon EF-RF adapter on the Canon R1 to have a wide choice of Canon EF mount lenses. This way you have more than a hundred extra lenses from which to choose.

Canon RF-lenses on the Canon EOS R1

If you want quality then you should look at the Canon RF lenses. The range is expanding considerably every year, so there is plenty of choice for every professional and beginner. The lenses are becoming more and more affordable and lighter, which is of course to everyone’s advantage.

If you like shooting portraits with a blurred background, the Canon RF 50mm F/1.8 is perfect. When you prefer to go into nature and want to get close to wildlife, then the Canon RF 100-400mm may be the right choice. If landscapes are more your thing then the Canon RF 15-35mm is fantastic.

Competitors of the Canon EOS R1

The new Canon EOS R1 is a professional high-end camera body, which is not yet on the market. There are a number of other cameras that compete with the Canon EOS R1. For example, you have cameras from Sony, Nikon and Fujifilm that also have very good specifications and may be worth considering.

The Canon EOS R3 is a good competitor of the Canon EOS R1. Both cameras have a full-frame sensor with a large number of megapixels. The R1 will mainly excel in the resolution that is almost four times higher than that of the Canon R3.

Nikon has a very good camera that is already on the market that comes very close to the Canon R1. For example, the Nikon Z9 has a 46-megapixel sensor and can record 8K60p RAW internally. A feature that we will also see in the Canon R1.

Conclusion

The Canon R1 is an exciting camera that will hit the market in 2024. The camera will have a full-frame 85-megapixel sensor, with image stabilization. You could also shoot 8K video at 60 frames per second.

The Canon R1 is a lot better than the Canon R3, mainly due to the 45+ megapixel sensor. The Canon R1 will be Canon’s new flagship, so the price will be between $8,000 – $10,000.
