Will the Nikon Z90 be the best camera in 2023? Of course, we all would like to know that. Nobody knows the answer, because the Nikon Z90 has not yet been launched.
However, there are a lot of specifications of the Nikon Z90 that will most likely be included in the production model. These specifications are not made up from scratch, this list has been carefully compiled through rumors, comparisons, and competitors.

Nikon seems to be releasing a new model that should be the successor to the Nikon D500. The Z90 will get an APS-C size sensor, which will give you 1.5x as much zoom range as a full-frame camera.
It seems very likely that the Nikon Z90 will compete directly with the Canon R7 because Nikon does not yet have a camera that fits in the same category. For example, the Z90 gets a 33-megapixel sensor, just like the Canon EOS R7.

Nikon Z90 release date
Little is known about the exact release date of the Nikon Z90, but it is almost certain that it will be released in 2023. This will undoubtedly be one of Nikon’s most popular cameras because it appeals to a wide audience, making it very unlikely for Nikon to wait another year.
According to rumors, the Nikon Z90 will even be unveiled before August, whether this is true is not 100% certain.
Video specs of the Nikon Z90
If you like to shoot cinematic videos that could be played in the cinema, then the Nikon Z90 could certainly help you with that. With the ability to record 4K videos at a maximum frame rate of 60 frames per second, you can even slow down the image at this resolution.
If you really want to film high-quality slow-motion, you have the option to film FHD in 120 frames per second. This way you can slow down the image up to 5 times. It could be that Nikon chooses to choose a maximum frame rate of 180 fps, because that way it is slightly better than its competitor.
In addition to these impressive video specs, the Nikon Z90 also has built-in stabilization, which can compensate for up to 6 stops of movement.

Focusing is an important factor, especially in sports and wildlife photography. Well, the Nikon Z90 will be excellent at that. With extensive algorithms, the Z90 will be able to recognize subjects such as people, animals, cars, trains, and planes.
This focusing mechanism will in any case be better than that of the current Nikon Z7 II and Z50, the Nikon Z90 will really be aimed at the (semi-) professional action photographer.
There's never too much action for the Z90
Yes, you read that right. There’s never too much action for the Nikon Z90. We expect that the Nikon Z90 will have a faster burst mode than its predecessor, the D500. Nikon’s Z90 will electronically capture up to 15+ frames per second.
If Nikon chooses a slower burst mode, it will be difficult to compete with Canon, for example, of which both the Canon R7 and the Canon R8 can shoot up to 30+ images per second.
Nikon Z90 price
Little is known about the price. The Nikon Z90 is a successor to the Nikon D500 and the competitor of the Canon EOS R7 and the Fujifilm X-S20. As a result, the price will be between $1500 – $2000. A lower amount is unlikely because Nikon will then already be at the level of the Z50 and one with a higher amount will already be Nikon with the Nikon Z6 II.
Built-in stabilization in the Nikon Z90
The Nikon Z90 will have built-in stabilization that we also see in the other Nikon Z models. For example, with the new Z90 we would have up to 6 stops of image stabilization. This allows you to shoot breathtaking video and take photos with a slower shutter speed.
Nikon Z90 viewfinder and screen
The Nikon Z90 will have a bright, very high quality viewfinder. It will have a resolution of 3.69 million pixels and you will hardly notice any lag. Thanks to the 120 fps OLED screen, you can hardly see that it’s a screen! You can also set the viewfinder in a 60Hz mode to save battery. You can find a 3.2″ touchscreen at the back that is tiltable.
In addition, we of course hope that the Nikon Z90 will have a no-blackout viewfinder. This is very useful during situations where you want to capture fast action. The camera takes photos without you seeing a black screen. So you will never miss the action again.
The Nikon Z90 uses the Nikon Z mount. Unfortunately, there are only 35 lenses available for this. That is a lot less than the Sony E mount, for which 187 lenses are available. Yet there is a right lens for almost every situation.
You can mount the Nikon FTZ II adapter to the Nikon Z90 to have a wide choice of Nikon F-mount lenses. This way you have another 360 extra lenses to choose from.

If you want quality, then you should look at the Nikon Z lenses. The range is expanding considerably every year, so there is plenty of choice for every professional and beginner. The lenses are becoming more and more affordable and lighter, which is of course to everyone’s advantage.
If you like shooting portraits with a blurred background, the Nikon Z 50mm F/1.8 is perfect. When you prefer to go into nature and want to get close to wildlife, the Nikon Z 100-400mm may be the right choice. If landscapes are more your thing, the Nikon Z 14-24mm is fantastic.

Competitors of the Nikon Z90
The new Nikon Z90 is a professional entry-level camera body, which is not yet on the market. There are a number of other cameras that compete with the Nikon Z90. For example, you have cameras from Canon, Sony and Fujifilm that also have very good specifications and may be worth considering.
In 2022, the Canon EOS R7 will be launched on the market, a camera that will compete with the Nikon Z90. Both cameras are almost strikingly similar. Both will have a 33 MP sensor and are aimed at action photography.
