Nikon Z7 III: Unveiling Rumors, Specs, and Release Date
Sebastiaan van ’t Hoog – Last updated on
Will the Nikon Z7 III be the best camera in 2024? Of course, we all would like to know that. Nobody knows the answer, because the Nikon Z7 Mark III has not yet been launched.
However, there are a lot of specifications of the Nikon Z7 III that will most likely be included in the production model. These specifications are not made up from scratch, this list has been carefully compiled through rumors, comparisons, and competitors.
We are almost certain that Nikon is working on the Z7III because the Z6III is also coming soon. Nikon has to improve especially in the autofocus area, which is a downside to the current Z7 II.
Find out quickly what we can expect from the Nikon Z7 Mark III!

Nikon Z7 III rumors: completely different than the Nikon Z8
When we look at the specifications, a few important things change. The Nikon Z7 III will be the model that will succeed the current Nikon Z7 II, which is a very successful model.
We do expect that the Nikon Z7 III will have a new sensor that has around 60 megapixels. With this, Nikon competes with the Sony A7R V and the Canon R5 Mark II.
With the arrival of the Nikon Z8, we see that Nikon wants to push the limits. Still, the Z7 III and Z8 will be completely different cameras, with the Z8 aimed at action photography and the Z7 III at landscape photography.

Release date
The Nikon Z7II was released in October 2020, so that’s already three years ago. I also think it’s time for an upgrade. Nikon has to take action because the Canon R5 II is also about to be launched.
It can’t be said for sure, so take the following with a grain of salt. It took just over two years from the original Nikon Z7 to the Z7II. Now that we are three years later, I expect the Z7 III to be released at the beginning of 2024.
That is the same date as the Nikon Z6III, which is not surprising. The older Nikon Z7 and Z6 were unveiled on the same date, and so are the Z7 II and Z6 II.
Video specs
If you like to shoot cinematic videos that could be played in the cinema, then the Nikon Z7 III could certainly help you with that. With the ability to record 4K videos at a maximum frame rate of 60 frames per second, you could even slow down the image at this resolution.
If you want to film high-quality slow-motion, you will get the option to film FHD in 120 frames per second. This way you can slow down the image up to 5 times.
It is quite unlikely that Nikon will add a 4K120p function, as that would make the Z8 less unique, after all, that is their most popular model at the moment.
In terms of video specs, not much changes compared to the Z7 II, these are the specs listed:
- 4K60p
- Internal 10-bit 4:2:2
- FHD120fps slow motion
Focus like never before
We can talk for a long time about the focus system because you don’t want to use the Z7II for any action photography. I don’t expect Nikon to give a major update to the focus mechanism with the Z7III, as this could reduce the sales of the Z8.
The Nikon Z7 III will recognize subjects such as people, animals, birds, and vehicles. It doesn’t matter how small the subject is: the Nikon Z7 III will recognize it.
There is a very good chance that Nikon will update the focusing system so that it can at least compete with Canon and Sony.
Burst mode
Yes, you read that right. There’s never too much action for the Nikon Z7 III. We expect the Nikon Z7 III to have a fast burst mode that can only electronically capture up to 10+ frames per second. This is the same speed that the Z7 II currently has and is also close to the Sony A7R V.
A faster burst mode is unlikely because the Z8 is already a 46-megapixel camera that shoots 20 images per second. It may be that the buffer of the Z7 III is smaller than the Z7 II, due to the increase in resolution. A double EXPEED 7 processor and CF-express cards could help with this.
The price
Little is known about the price. The Nikon Z7 Mark III is a successor to the Nikon Z7 Mark II and the competitor of the Canon EOS R5. As a result, the price will be between $3000 – $3500. A lower amount is unlikely because Nikon will then already be at the level of the Nikon Z6 II and one with a higher amount will already be Nikon with the Nikon Z8.
Viewfinder and screen
The Nikon Z7 III will have a bright, very high-quality viewfinder. It will have a resolution of 3.69 million pixels and you will hardly notice any lag. With this, the viewfinder will be almost the same as that of the Z7 II.
When we look at the screen at the back, we hope that it can tilt and rotate this time. For example, the Z8 and Z9 have a good mechanism that is quite appreciated.
Use F-lenses
The Nikon Z7 III uses the Nikon Z mount. Unfortunately, there are only 42 lenses available for this. That is a lot less than the Sony E mount, for which 187 lenses are available. Yet there is a right lens for almost every situation. You can mount the Nikon FTZ II adapter to the Nikon Z7 Mark III to have a wide choice of Nikon F-mount lenses. This way you have another 360 extra lenses to choose from.
Nikon Z-lenses
If you want quality, then you should look at the Nikon Z lenses. The range is expanding considerably yearly, so there is plenty of choice for every professional and beginner. The lenses are becoming more and more affordable and lighter, which is of course to everyone’s advantage.
If you like shooting portraits with a blurred background, the Nikon Z 50mm F/1.8 is perfect. The Nikon Z 100-400mm may be the right choice when you prefer to go into nature and get close to wildlife. If landscapes are more your thing, the Nikon Z 14-24mm is fantastic.
By the way, I’ve got many more rumors ready for you. Make sure to check them out to see upcoming cameras!

Competitors of the Nikon Z7 III
The new Nikon Z7 Mark III is a professional high-end camera body, which is not yet on the market. Several other cameras compete with the Nikon Z7 Mark III. You have cameras from Canon, Sony, and Nikon that also have very good specifications and may be worth considering.
Canon EOS R5
The Canon EOS R5 is a good competitor of the Nikon Z7 Mark III. Both cameras have a full-frame sensor with a large number of megapixels. Both cameras have a fast burst mode, but you can film 8K videos with the Canon EOS R5, while the Nikon Z7 Mark III can film up to 4K.
Sony A7 IV
The Sony competitor is the Sony A7 IV. This 33-megapixel camera can also take beautiful photos and videos with built-in stabilization. The new Z7 Mark III has a 46-megapixel sensor, which means that digital zooming will work better on the new Nikon Z7 Mark III.
Nikon D850
Nikon’s top-of-the-line DSLR camera is the Nikon D850. Both cameras have a 46-megapixel full-frame sensor. The Nikon Z7 Mark III is a mirrorless camera, so the glass will be closer to the sensor. This can save you a lot of weight. Consider the Nikon D850 when choosing between multiple cameras.
